The crowd was silent as the casket was hoisted by the 6 SEALs.
The energy in the air was one of intense pride combined with sadness for the fallen warrior, Michael Monsoor. An unexpected movement disturbed those in the audience that were closest to the line of SEALs, who were solemnly watching their teammate’s last march. As the casket arrived at the first SEAL, he slapped his golden trident into the solid mahogany; the next SEAL followed suit. The wind rustled the trees, and everyone held their breath, as they observed a rare send off by brothers in arms. By the time Mikey had travelled the line of teammates, there were over 100 golden tridents, the symbol of honor for a SEAL, adorning his final resting home. The sight was inspiring and shown across the world as a symbol that not many understood, but most appreciated for its beauty.
Michael Monsoor was like you and I – a simple kid who had a dream to be a SEAL.
A real team player, he was always first to help a teammate and last to worry about his own gear until everyone else was squared away. He didn’t see himself as unique – there were many in the Teams just like him. In Iraq, Michael volunteered to join a mission to help his teammates. It wasn’t his turn to go out, but he did anyhow. An hour later he saw the enemy grenade land a foot from his teammates, with no time for them to react, he had a choice. Let it blow, and kill his teammates, or take action. The action was unmistakable, and can only be summed up with a single word in English: Honor.
Michael Jumped on the grenade and saved his teammates lives. They gave him their tridents and love in return.
In SEALFIT training I will ask you to jump on a few grenades of your own. You must understand the importance of every decision you make from here on out. Like Michael, those decisions, big and small, will impact your life in a big way. Hopefully they won’t require the same level of sacrifice as his. But it’s important to ask yourself what you are willing to sacrifice for the results you are capable of achieving with SEALFIT? Let’s not let Mikey down.
Hooyah – time to do this thing!
