What does “flow” look and feel like? You know it when you feel it, right? These are moments when everything seems to click, when you are fully engaged in an activity that you’re passionate about with little regard for analysis or idle thought. You are hyper aware of everything around you and it seems like some mysterious force has placed you on auto-pilot. You observe your own actions flow out of your body and mind with ease as if in slow motion. Look to align the following four characteristics in your performance and you will find a flow state comes more naturally:
- A high degree of concentration and focus
- The merging of action with awareness
- Good fit between your abilities and the challenge undertaken
- The experience of being in control with minimal effort
What then? Well, you will want to anchor this state of awareness so you can find it again and again. When in a flow state, take a nano-second to note the unique physiology and psychology you are experiencing in that moment, such as:
- What is your breathing pattern?
- What is your mind focused on?
- What emotions do you feel?
- What is your posture like?
- What is your internal dialogue?
When you note these things, try to anchor them deeper into your being by exaggerating them. Note each item in turn and enhance it 100 times in intensity. Conjure up the emotions and feelings – enhance them 100 times. Re-create the posture and breathing patterns and exaggerate them. The final step is to create a trigger movement or series of movements that will cause all these things to flow into your awareness and fire together like a stick of dynamite going off – BAM! For example – jump up, shove your fist in the air, and shout:
