The holidays are a time to power off the laptop, take some well deserved time away from work and spend it with family – if you are so lucky.
But so many in service to this country will be missing another holiday, far from home. If this is you, thank you. We know you will be missed and honor your sacrifice. I have personally missed many holidays over a 20 year Navy career and know how challenging it can be.
Something to consider if you can't be with your loved ones over the holidays is to take some extra time to be alone…really alone…and sit in silence. Before heading into your work or in the middle of the day find someplace private and just sit and listen to your breath. Or contemplate something of beauty. 5 minutes is all you need, more time if you can.
Just sit, no agenda, no thinking allowed. In this silence you may find a connection with your distant loved ones that you could not feel or hear in the noise of your industrious and brilliant mind.
And if you are lucky enough to be with your family over the holidays, here is a thought… take some time to be alone and sit in silence also!
Your family will appreciate how calm and centered you are as the subtle stress of the holidays takes its toll.
Happy Thanksgiving and thanks again to all of you serving away from home.
