The Habits of Mastery are behaviors that “common” men and women develop into habits, then virtues, which by their nature make the individual “uncommon.” We call them Masters because they seem so, well, better than the rest of us at navigating life. Well, I want us all to be Masters, and know that all it takes is a disciplined approach to how we organize our thinking day in and day out. The common man spends his time doing, and not thinking. I want you to develop the habit of thinking first, then doing. By practicing the power of thought, in all of its rich and varied forms, you will literally “Think and Grow Rich” like Napolean Hill said…but rich in not just material wealth but abundance of happiness, peace and contribution to the greater good.
Positive Attitude
This section of the Habits article will focus on positive attitudes. The Master maintains a positive mind and attitude no matter how bad things get. He or she understands the corrosiveness of negative thinking, feeling and talking. They know things only get worse when negative thinking rears its ugly head. They maintain a vigilant watch over their mental state, controlling their minds and channeling their thoughts to positive and purposeful things. When things go wrong, they don’t blame and wallow in self-pity; rather they immediately seek the positive lesson in the mess…the silver lining…then they act on it. They don’t dwell on the negative, but learn to reframe each event to only the positive remains. The Master finds victory where it is at.
In the Unbeatable Mind Academy we introduce the concept of the First Premise. The First Premise is to win in your mind before you enter the arena. There are many aspects to being able to do this well. However, no matter how focused and in control you are, if you allow negativity to creep in and stay in your mind for long, you will sabotage all efforts. Negativity stamps out goodness. You must set up a watchdog in your mind to observe the mind in action. When a negative thought creeps in, then you immediately snuff it out by feeding the positive, courage thought. The metaphor of feeding the courage dog is a reminder to this watch dog to do its job! That watch dog is your witness and your guardian at the same time.
So feed the courage dog and remain positive at all times – even when things are really shitty and everyone around you is wallowing in negative self-pity or criticism. Rise above them and be uncommon!
